How it works

Rates move continuously through the trading day, so any figure produced here is a snapshot of the moment it was fetched rather than a fixed value. The arithmetic is a single multiplication; the part that costs people money is which rate they are actually entitled to when the transaction settles.

Formula
Converted = Amount × Rate(from → to)
Cross rate: Rate(A → B) = Rate(base → B) / Rate(base → A)
Inverse: Rate(B → A) = 1 / Rate(A → B)
Variables
  • Rate(from → to)units of the target currency that one unit of the source buys
  • Cross ratea quote assembled through a base currency, normally USD, when the pair is not quoted directly
  • Mid-market ratethe midpoint between bid and ask, and the rate published almost everywhere
Worked example
Inputs: 500 USD to INR at an illustrative rate of 1 USD = 83.20 INR. This is a worked example only, not a live or current quote.
  1. 500 × 83.20 = 41,600
  2. Inverse direction: 1 INR = 1 / 83.20 = 0.012019 USD
Result: 41,600 INR at that illustrative rate
Notes
  • The mid-market rate is a reference, not a price you can transact at. Retail banks commonly build in 2% to 4% against it, card networks add roughly 1% on top of their own wholesale rate, and airport bureaux take 10% or more. A conversion tells you what the money is worth, not what will leave the account.
  • Decline dynamic currency conversion at a foreign card terminal. The prompt offering to charge you in your home currency hands the rate to the merchant payment processor, whose margin is nearly always worse than the one your own issuer would apply. Pay in the local currency.
  • Do not chain roundings through a cross rate. Converting A to USD, rounding to two decimals, then USD to B compounds the error and can move the last unit on small amounts. Carry full precision through the intermediate step and round once at the end.
  • Published rates lag. Weekend and holiday quotes are usually Friday closing values held flat, and a converter refreshing daily can be a full percent away from the live interbank market during a volatile week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our rates are updated hourly during the business day from established foreign-exchange data providers. Live interbank rates move every second, so expect small differences from your bank.

Banks, credit cards, and fintech apps add a margin (typically 1-4%) on top of the interbank rate to cover their costs. Always check the total fee, not just the headline rate.

The mid-market (or interbank) rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell rates that large banks trade at. It is the most accurate reference price, and services like Wise and Revolut quote close to it.
