Kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces, stones and tons all describe mass, and the imperial side is pinned to the metric one exactly: the international pound has been precisely 0.45359237 kg since 1959. Nothing in the chain is an approximation, so a conversion stays exact right up until you round it for display.

- Three different tons circulate and they differ by 12% end to end: 907.18 kg for a US short ton, 1,000 kg for a metric tonne, 1,016.05 kg for a UK long ton. Freight quotes, emissions figures and commodity contracts all say ton without always saying which, and on a full load the gap is worth real money.
- Precious metals trade in troy ounces, which are not the ounces on a kitchen scale. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g against the avoirdupois 28.349523125 g, about 9.7% heavier, and a troy pound holds 12 troy ounces rather than 16. Any gold or silver price quoted per ounce means troy.
- These are mass conversions, and mass does not vary with location. Weight is a force and does: the same 74.84 kg presses down with about a sixth of the force on the Moon. Everyday use conflates the two harmlessly, but engineering work mixing kilograms with pounds-force will not balance until the two are kept apart.
