FICA shown at the standard 7.65% rate (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare).

How it works

Net pay is what actually lands in the account after payroll tax, income tax withholding, and whatever else the employer takes out. This works per pay period rather than annually, which matters because the number people budget against is the cheque, and then multiplies by the number of periods to project an annual figure.

Formula
FICA = Gross × 7.65%   (Social Security 6.20% + Medicare 1.45%)
Federal withholding = Gross × Federal rate
State withholding = Gross × State rate
Net pay = Gross − FICA − Federal − State − Other deductions
Annual net = Net pay × Periods per year (52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semi-monthly, 12 monthly)
Variables
  • Grosspay for the period before any deduction
  • FICAthe employee half of Social Security and Medicare; the employer pays a matching 7.65%
  • Other deductionshealth premiums, retirement contributions, garnishments, union dues
Worked example
Inputs: $5,000 biweekly gross, 12% federal, 5% state, $200 other deductions
  1. FICA: 5,000 × 0.0765 = 382.50
  2. Federal: 5,000 × 0.12 = 600.00
  3. State: 5,000 × 0.05 = 250.00
  4. Net: 5,000 − 382.50 − 600 − 250 − 200 = 3,567.50
  5. Annual: 3,567.50 × 26 = 92,755
Result: $3,567.50 per cheque, about $92,755 net for the year
Notes
  • The 7.65% rate is statutory and stable, but Social Security stops at an annual wage base ($176,100 for 2025, raised most years) while Medicare has no cap. High earners see their take-home jump partway through the year when the Social Security portion switches off, then a 0.9% Additional Medicare surtax begins above $200,000 of wages. That surtax threshold is written into statute and has never been indexed.
  • Enter your effective federal rate, not your bracket. Someone in the 22% bracket typically pays an effective federal rate near 12% to 14% once the standard deduction and lower brackets are counted, and using 22% here will understate net pay badly.
  • Deduction order changes the answer. Section 125 health premiums come out before both income tax and FICA; traditional 401(k) contributions reduce income tax but not FICA; Roth contributions reduce neither. A flat percentage on gross cannot capture that, so treat this as an estimate rather than a payroll register.
  • A biweekly year usually holds 26 pay dates but occasionally 27, which shifts per-cheque amounts and trips up annual projections built by simple multiplication.
  • Nine states levy no wage income tax, and several cities including New York add a local tax on top. Set the state rate to zero or add the local rate into it accordingly.
