Rough estimate only, for the US marketplace (amazon.com, USD, lbs/inches); not for Amazon India or other regions. FBA fulfillment fees here use a simplified US weight-tier table; Amazon's actual fees vary by price band, exact size tier and a fuel/logistics surcharge, and change often. Check Seller Central before making pricing decisions.

How it works

Amazon takes two separate cuts on every FBA sale. The referral fee is a percentage of the selling price and depends on the product category; the fulfilment fee is a flat charge set by the size tier and billable weight of the unit. This works out both, adds monthly storage, and subtracts your landed cost to show what actually survives as profit.

Formula
Referral fee = Selling price × Category rate
Dimensional weight = (L × W × H) / Divisor
Billable weight = max(Unit weight, Dimensional weight)
Fulfilment fee = tier rate for that size band and billable weight
Storage = (L × W × H / 1728) × Monthly rate per cubic foot
Net profit = Price − Product cost − Referral − Fulfilment − Storage
Variables
  • Category ratereferral percentage Amazon sets per category, commonly 8% to 15%
  • Billable weightthe greater of actual and dimensional weight, which is what the fee tier reads
  • Divisordimensional weight divisor, 139 for US cubic-inch measurements
  • Product costlanded cost per unit: manufacturing plus freight plus duty
Worked example
Inputs: $29.99 price, $8.00 landed cost, 1.5 lb, 10 × 8 × 4 in, 15% referral category
  1. Cubic inches: 10 × 8 × 4 = 320
  2. Dimensional weight: 320 / 139 = 2.30 lb, which exceeds the actual 1.5 lb
  3. Billable weight is therefore 2.30 lb, landing in the band up to 3 lb: fulfilment fee $6.10
  4. Referral: 29.99 × 0.15 = 4.50
  5. Storage: 320 / 1728 = 0.185 cu ft × $0.87 = 0.16
  6. Total fees: 4.50 + 6.10 + 0.16 = 10.76
  7. Net: 29.99 − 8.00 − 10.76 = 11.23
Result: $11.23 profit per unit, a 37.4% margin, with $10.76 going to Amazon
Notes
  • Fee schedules are Amazon policy, not arithmetic. Referral percentages, size-tier boundaries, and per-pound rates are revised on a published date each year and differ by marketplace, so treat any figure here as the shape of the calculation rather than a permanent number, and check Seller Central before pricing.
  • Dimensional weight beats actual weight for anything light and bulky. A pillow can sit two tiers above its scale weight, which is why shaving half an inch off box height sometimes moves more profit than renegotiating unit cost.
  • Storage is the fee sellers most often ignore, and it is the one that compounds. Long-term storage surcharges and low-inventory or aged-inventory fees apply to units sitting past their thresholds, and slow movers can quietly consume their own margin.
  • Returns are not free even when the customer pays nothing. You keep the referral fee refund but lose the fulfilment fee on most categories, plus return processing, so a 10% return rate hits a thin-margin item far harder than the headline number suggests.
