Robinson Formula
Miller Formula
Hamwi Formula

Note

These formulas are designed for adults taller than 5 feet (152 cm). Ideal weight varies based on body composition, bone density, and other factors. Use these as general guidelines only.

How it works

Estimates a reference body weight for a given height and sex using the Devine formula, the clinical standard originally developed for drug dosing rather than aesthetics.

Formula
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft | Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Variables
  • Base50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) at 5 ft
  • 2.3 kgadded per inch of height above 5 ft
Worked example
Inputs: Male, 180 cm (70.9 in)
  1. Inches over 60: 70.9 − 60 = 10.9
  2. 10.9 × 2.3 = 25.1
  3. 50 + 25.1 = 75.1
Result: ≈ 75 kg
Notes
  • Devine ignores body composition entirely. A muscular athlete will exceed it while being lean and healthy.
  • Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas give slightly different figures; treat any of them as a range, not a target.
