Target Heart Rate

Calculate maximum heart rate and training zones using the Karvonen heart-rate reserve method

Last reviewed: How we build & verify

Estimates only. Guidelines define exercise intensity zones differently (for example the AHA general target is 50-85% of maximum heart rate), so these reserve-based bands are a guide, not a prescription. The 220 minus age formula can be off by 10-12 bpm for an individual, and medicines such as beta-blockers lower heart rate. If you have a heart condition or are new to exercise, ask your doctor which target range is safe for you.
