Calculate Indian income tax under the New Regime (FY 2025-26 slabs, with Section 87A rebate) and Old Regime with 80C deductions
How it works
Indian income tax is charged in slabs, so each band of income is taxed at its own rate rather than the whole amount jumping to the top rate. Two parallel regimes exist: the new regime offers lower slab rates but disallows most deductions, while the old regime keeps higher rates alongside Chapter VI-A deductions such as section 80C. Whichever regime applies, a 4% health and education cess is added on top of the computed tax.
Taxable income = Gross income − allowed deductions (80C and others apply under the old regime only) Base tax = Σ (income falling within each slab × that slab rate) Total tax = Base tax × 1.04 (4% health and education cess)

- First ₹3,00,000 at nil: ₹0
- Next ₹4,00,000 (₹3L to ₹7L) at 5%: ₹20,000
- Next ₹3,00,000 (₹7L to ₹10L) at 10%: ₹30,000
- Next ₹2,00,000 (₹10L to ₹12L) at 15%: ₹30,000
- Base tax: 0 + 20,000 + 30,000 + 30,000 = ₹80,000
- Cess: 80,000 × 0.04 = ₹3,200
- Slab boundaries and rates are reset in the Union Budget most years, and the new regime in particular has been rewritten repeatedly since its introduction. The example above names FY 2024-25 for that reason; the tool applies the slab set for the year it is configured for, and any figure you carry into a different year needs rechecking against the Finance Act.
- The section 87A rebate can reduce tax to nil for smaller incomes, and its threshold differs between the two regimes and moves between Budgets. A slab calculation alone will overstate the liability of anyone sitting under that ceiling.
- The two regimes are a genuine choice for most salaried taxpayers, and the break-even depends entirely on how much deduction you can actually claim. Someone with a home loan, full 80C usage, HRA and 80D premiums often still comes out ahead on the old regime, while a taxpayer with none of those rarely does.
- Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh of income and stacks before cess, at rates rising in steps. Any calculation that stops at the slab table understates high earners by a wide margin.
- Salary income also carries a standard deduction before the slabs are applied, and its amount differs by regime. Enter income after that deduction, or the result will be too high.
